A professional wine taster is a sommelier, but you do not have to be a sommelier to enjoy the art of wine tasting. If you develop a refined palate for wine, you will find that you will enhance your enjoyment of wine drinking.

You will first notice a distinct line between wine tasting and wine drinking. Wine drinking is what people do with meals and at social parties when they want to relax. Wine tasting is a serious means of discovering which wines people enjoy drinking the most and why they enjoy drinking them.

When you taste wine, you should always take notes on the wine you taste. If you are at a wine tasting event, even a wine tasting party, your host should provide note cards and writing implements so that every guest can take notes on the wines offered for tasting.

On your note card, you should make note of three main categories, sight, smell and flavor. First, in good light, hold your wine up against a white surface and jot down the color of the wine in the glass. Is the wine transparent and light red in colored or is the wine opaque and dark red in color?

Second, swirl the wine around in the glass to all oxygen to release some of its aroma, bring the glass right up to your nose and smell it. Does it have a strong aroma? Is it flowery or fruity? Does the wine have any nuance aromas? If you think you smell odd aromas, such as mint, green olives, musty mushrooms, chocolate, skunk or cabbage, do not be alarmed and do not think there is something wrong with your smelling or the wine.

If you smell nuances of such odd odors, you will notice that they are wafting odors that enhance rather than detract from the overall aroma of the wine. Commonly, people find nuance odors of all of the above listed aromas in wines and in addition, they often find nuance odors such as old leather, wet wool, cut green grass, horsiness, mousiness, butterscotch, butter, soy sauce or canned, coked green beans in wines.

When you smell the wine, first write down the obvious aromas of the wine and then take a moment to identify any nuance aromas that the wine emits and write that down. If you are having difficulty placing an aroma, perhaps someone at the wine tasting event can pinpoint what you are smelling if he or she smells it as well.

After making note of the wine's aroma, take enough of a sip of it to swish it around in your mouth and saturate your taste buds. You could perhaps even draw breath of air over the wine while you are holding it in your mouth to bring out even more of its flavor. Ask yourself how it feels in your mouth. Does it feel smooth? What kind of flavor does it have? Does it taste sweet or does it taste bitter?

Being able to express your answers to all of these questions will determine your artistry in wine tasting.

Wine Cellar Cooling Styles and Sizes - Choosing the Right Fit

Wine cellar cooling units are air conditioners specifically designed to operate at an ideal cellar temperature, usually 55 - 57 degrees. As with other air conditioners, these systems must provide an evaporator coil to cool the air and condense moisture inside the cellar and a condenser coil which uses a compressor to remove the heat coming out of the room.

Wine cellar cooling systems come in many different sizes and shapes, but they all fall into one of the three categories. Here is an overview of your choices.

1. Through-the-Wall Design

One of the most popular, reliable and least expensive styles used in private cellars is a "through-the-wall" configuration, in which a self-contained air conditioning unit is mounted literally through the wall. These units are best for smaller cellars as they have a limited cooling capacity. Thought must be given to the best placement of these units, so as not to interfere with the racking. The condenser side of the unit is outside of the cellar, and generates some heat and noise, another factor to be taken into account when determining the location. A room air conditioner is NOT an alternative to purchasing an air conditioner specifically designed for use in a wine cellar from a reliable manufacturer.

2. Ducted System

A versatile style available from some manufacturers is a self-contained ducted unit which offers maximum flexibility in design and installation, and has the cooling capacity to be used in any size cellar. A grille on the inside wall is connected by insulated flexible ductwork to a self-contained unit outside of the cellar which contains the evaporator, fan and condenser. This unit can be placed in any indoor, out-of-the-way location outside the cellar. The result is a quiet cellar with literally no obtrusive equipment taking up space. This system is ideal for private, larger cellars or commercial use, as it can be sized for any cellar capacity.

3. Split System

Available from some manufacturers is a split system comprised of two separate mechanical elements (condenser and evaporator) that can be used when ducting is not feasible, especially when the condenser must be installed outdoors or in an unheated space, such as a garage. Split systems have the evaporator fan mounted inside the wine cellar with the condenser located outside the room and connected to the cellar by refrigeration tubing. Unlike the first two styles, the split system must be installed by licensed electrical and refrigeration technicians. Locating the condenser outside can be problematic, as it must be able to hold its set-point in both summer and winter temperatures. These may also be a noise factor inside the room due to the type of evaporate used. The split system can be sized for any size cellar.

Correctly Sizing Your Unit

Counting the number of bottles or adding up the cubic footage of the cellars is a first step but not really sufficient information to select the size, type or capacity of the wine cooling unit. These are important facts but only two parameters that enter into the calculations for proper selection. A trained technician from a reputable manufacturer or distributor will take into account the amount of insulation available, the temperature of the surrounding spaces, the cellar's location in the building, frequency of door openings, frequency of wine turnover, lighting intensity and duration, size and insulation of doors and windows, and any other variable present in the cellar's environment.

A Guide To Wine Bottle Racks

Wine has been part of my family since I can remember. I first got into small wine racks produced for appreciating and storing wine at my grandmother's.

My grandmother owns a modest vineyard and makes wine every year. One of my big joys I recall was, tasting her freshly made wine while helping with bottling and storing it in the wine bottle racks in her summer kitchen.

It is there that I learned the importance of wine racks if you want to preserve wine the right way.

Year after year, as my knowledge got deeper, I appreciated wine more and more.

Growing up, I developed a real passion for wine; I went to study it to understand its complexity and mystique.

As you can imagine, one of the first things I got when I moved in my own house was some small wine racks to start my very own collection.

Even though I started small, as I was living in an apartment, and therefore couldn't maintain a wine cellar, it was a start.

Day after day my collection keeps growing as does my knowledge and appreciation for all things wine.

Wine bottle racks not only give a tone of sophistication in my house now; they add to its warmth and to my personality.

My current wine bottle racks are made of wood and hold about 50 bottles, but, the way it is created, I can add to it by simply placing another layer on top....these are stackable wooden wine racks that allow your collection to grow over time.

Recently I traveled to Spain, France and Italy. The wine countries of the world. I have added a significant amount to my small wine racks to my collection and enjoyed every moment of it.

In France, every house has wine bottle racks; it is simply a tradition with them.

Each evening after diner one retires with a glass of wine and a few slices of cheese in front of the television or with a book. There, everyone collects wine in one form or another -- small wine racks or large wine bottle racks; every house prides itself with one. Of course, many houses have the cellars; maybe one day I will have a wine cellar too.

However, for now I am happy with my growing wine collection.

Enjoy a glass of wine everyday. And always remember to store it right, in wine bottle racks.
